What Questions You Should I Ask My Sax DJ To Make Sure I Get The Most Out Of Them? (Part 1)

Once you’ve decided to book a saxophonist, there are a few questions that you’ll need to ask to make sure that both your chosen sax player knows where and when to play and that you get the most out of them! Some of these might seem obvious but I’ve been asked plenty of seemingly silly or obvious questions so it is always worth mentioning.

Asking about availability and general logistics are key. Some saxophone players will book in multiple gigs on the same day so it I worth making sure that you are clear with what time you are wanting the saxophonic to play. Do not be surprised if they are unwilling to do a half hour performance at midday and another half hour performance at midnight (the was a genuine request from lat year).

The sax player will need to know the duration of their set and whether they are performing to their own backing tracks or whether they are performing with a DJ. Whilst some saxophonists (like Nick Pike Sax) DJ at the same time as sax playing, some will not and the cost will reflect that. Also be clear if you expect your saxophonist to provide their own DJ or not - they usually wouldn’t but some sax players have particular DJ companions who know their performance strengths and work with them to heighten their show! On this theme, the saxophonist will need the DJ and venue contact details (and if they don’t ask for them then make sure to give it to them)!

You will need to discuss set up needs such as power points near where they would be performing if the saxophonist is bringing their own PA/set of speakers and access points to bring their gear inside. Location within your room and how much space the PA is allowed to take up is important in some smaller venues and making sure that they don’t block fire exits etc. is key - this should all be covered by your venue coordinator or wedding planner.

Set up time is really important to discuss between the performer and the venue. Nick Pike Sax has been caught a few times by weddings overrunning and then the venue needing the musicians to setup a full PA, lights and soundcheck in 20 minutes - a job that would ideally take an hour and a half! Wedding planners and venue managers should be sympathetic to this (but not all of them!) so it is worth discussing this early on.
