There are a lot of details to get sorted for your wedding day and there are a lot of things that you will have to pay for. Hiring the best version of what you want, at a price that suits you is a no brainer but balancing the cost of all the various wedding suppliers can be a headache.
If you have a wedding planner then it is likely a lot of this will be dealt with for you but if you’re doing a DIY wedding then you’ll be spinning a variety of plates at the same time and likely paying a reasonable amount of cash for them all.
I cannot stress enough how important music is on your wedding day. From the ceremony, to the reception, to background tunes during the wedding breakfast, to the band or DJ (maybe both!) later on in the evening, all meld together to weave a tapestry of unforgettable entertainment for your guests that they will be complimenting you on for your class and impeccable taste for years to come!
However, hiring an acoustic duo, a sax player, a DJ, a band and a roaming singer is outside of most normal budgets. Some outfits do all of these, for example, I’ve done plenty of weddings where I’ve done a solo set in the afternoon, played a band set in the evening and then DJ’ed onto midnight. That is expensive but saves a lot in comparison to hiring all of these performers individually plus it has the advantage that you have the same person on site with the same equipment who will be able to gel all the acts together and won’t need oversight to make sure that they’re plugging in their gear in the right places.
An excellent option is to hire a saxophonist who can DJ as well. They will bring their own PA/speaker system as well as microphones and lights (do ask about this as different players might have different options or packages that will say how much extra gear they will bring) and will be able to provide audio support throughout the day. As well as varied performances in both your wedding breakfast and evening entertainment, they will also be able to help with announcements and play background music when needed/appropriate.
For this kind of full service you’ll be looking at something like £1000 and upwards to £5000 but it is worth getting someone who knows what they’re doing… we’ve all been at weddings where things go wrong and those thing, bar drunken uncles, are nearly always avoidable! Agencies will always cost more as there are more admin staff and online platforms like Encore and Poptop will have additional platform and client fees (adding about 20% to the overall price) which is worth considering if you’re trying to keep the price down. Querying players direct is often a good way of saving a significant chunk of money.
