Sax or DJ… or Both?

sax player london weddings

‘To Sax or not to Sax?’ - That is not the question, because of course you want a saxophone at your wedding, party or event! But do you want or need to have a separate DJ?

Well, that is a little more complicated. Every sax player will have their own set of material to perform with, their setlist and styles of playing will vary but they will ultimately have all the materials to do their show as a solo player, some even DJ themselves!

Should I hire a DJ for my wedding?

The answer is yes. I’ve done plenty of weddings where a friend of the bridal party has DJ’ed or the music has been left as an open Spotify playlist. By midnight, the DJ friends just want to be drunk and enjoy themselves and leaving a laptop on the dance floor can lead to utter audio carnage. There are situations where this might be ideal but it won’t be smooth.Never forget that you’re hiring wedding or event suppliers for their skill and knowledge of what will make your day better and more streamlined.

Sax players and DJs know what make most dance floors work. You personally may not like their choice of music but it is likely that they chose that song because it will keep people on the dance floor, excite them or clam them down towards the very end of the night. Different crowds and groups of people want different things that don’t necessarily align with what will make the party memorable for everyone, I had a wedding a few years ago where I sax and DJ’ed and was told to do anything that the bride requested. She requested nearly the entire back catalogue of N-Dubz which meant that the bride and her three bridesmaids had a great night but it kept the dance floor otherwise completely empty and a lot of people went home earlier than they otherwise would.

Why hire a DJ?

Depending on your venue, It can sometimes be beneficial to hire a DJ to be a focal point of the room and dance floor but also allow you to have music throughout your dinner or to have sound equipment for speeches. Music and audio generally feature extensively at most parties and weddings so do not just assume that an Argos karaoke machine and some sunny optimism will make your party unique and memorable. Because it will but for all the wrong reasons… It’s always worth asking someone experienced to advise you..
