Deck the Halls and Hit The Road - It’s Christmas Time Again!

There’s a certain kind of magic that hits events and parties towards the end of November and beginning of December.
A mix of excitement at all the socialising where your company goes all-out with entertainment and drinks to convince you to keep working for them for another year and the approach of the natural end of the year. This slightly frenetic, slightly exhausted, quite excitable energy translates to the audiences of my saxophone performances and it makes for a very fun (though utterly exhausting) time of year.
Another wonderful element about the Festive party season is that, as a sax player, I get to be taken to all the nicest places in London. Last week alone I was playing for clients in The Savoy Hotel, The Mandarin Oriental, a couple of pretty bars in Soho and Victoria and the utterly gorgeous Wokefield Estate Golf Course just outside of Reading. The next couple of weeks are likely to look the same as last minute party requests come flying in.
For a lot of these Christmas parties, the guests are keen to be entertained. You only have to look at people and honk some sweet saxy magic to generate a smile or a cheer. Plus, the backdrops are incredible - Christmas decorations in London hotels are utterly ridiculous but beautiful and playing beneath fairy lights, fully-decked out Christmas trees and Wreaths, nativity scenes etc. is quite cool.
This sax music, especially the Christmas instrumental music, has a way of meeting people exactly where they are, giving them a brief pause from the frenzy, a breath of nostalgia, or simply a reminder that joy is still swirling somewhere around them. And then you pull out the saxophone covers of the classic singalongs and the party is back on! It’s a special time of year to play to people and it’s wonderful to see the joy that saxophone can bring to people.
Of course, this is up to about mid-December when everyone has had enough of the Christmas Chaos and just want to hibernate over the last week before Christmas with their families!
Merry Christmas to you, whether you’re partying with a sax player or hibernating to get away from one - have a good time either way!
