Did someone say seasonal content? As wedding season comes to a close, corporate season starts to pick up and, at the end of that tunnel, comes the Christmas party season - Ho, ho ho!
But what sax-friendly tunes are you wanting to rock around the Christmas Tree this year? I was debating hitting up the classics but I have a tried and tested (and only marginally cheesy) Christmas set that I do every year for a charity event down in Sussex so I thought I’d outline that as there are a couple of left field options… but they’re mostly ones to expect to work well as sax cover versions!
1. It’s The Most Wonderful Time - Andy Williams
Of all the Christmas tunes, this has to be the biggest ear worm of them all. I’m not sure if it is the big band arrangement or Andy Williams’s signature crooner belt but I just love this tune.
2. Rockn’ Around The Christmas Tree/Jingle Bell Rock - Michael Bublé
Michael Bublé?! A Christmas tune?!? Nay - A Michael Bublé Christmas Medley. Love him or hate him, Mickey Bubbles does an emotional Christmas big band tune very well.
3. Let It Snow - Jamie Cullum Version
Let it snow with the signature of cool of Jamie Cullum and a damn good big band arrangement as well - loads of fun for the twenty somethings!
4. Here Comes Santa Claus - Gene Autry
This tune is one of the first great Christmas tunes and I always think that it reflects the modern day manic energy of the festive period.
5. Jingle Bells - Gwen Stefani Version
You wouldn’t think of Jingle Bells as a party starter tune… not until you’ve heard Gwen Stefani’s version of it!
6. Sleigh Ride - The Ronettes
Quintessentially Christmas, this is one of the best feel good Christmas tunes with a little bit of Rockn’ Roll and an infectious beat. And who doesn’t love 5 key changes?
7. Fairytale of New York - The Pogues
I married an Irish lady so I hear this 6 times a day from mid-November through to early February. It’s a hit with crowds and is an excellent singalong tune.
8. Last Christmas - Wham!
Yeah, can’t go wrong with this for a smooch under the mistletoe…
9. Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin’ Stevens
Another classic feel good Christmas track with a banging sax solo - an excellent addition to any Christmas playlist!
10. All I want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey
What would a Christmas party be without at least one person singing along badly with one of the finest vocalists on the planet to one of the finest Christmas songs on the planet?
