One of the most commonly used key phrases that is searched for on google with regard to saxophonists is ‘Sax players near me’ or ‘Saxophonists near me’. The answer is nearly always that there are sax players near you (especially if you’re in London or other big cities) and, even if not, then there are saxophonists willing to travel to where you are.
It is always worth searching in your local area for solo saxophonists and whether or not they provide the right show for your wedding or event. I’m lucky enough to have a couple of wedding venues and pubs that do weddings near me and I love getting enquiries within the local area. It makes travel and the logistics significantly easier and means that I don’t get back at 2am as well!
Using a local saxophone player will save on extra costs like travel and food. They might even be willing to knock a little off their standard performance fee to sweeten the deal - this is definitely not always the case but worth asking!
Generally a solo saxophonist will be travelling with their saxophone, some sort of speaker system, a phone/tablet/laptop to play their backing tracks through and an assortment of stands so they will nearly always travel via car. This means that, if you are lucky enough to live far in the countryside then the saxophonist can get to you easily. Saxophonists will happily travel a certain way, although the norm is that they will start charging for travel when the journey is more than an hour each way.
The speaker system that a saxophonist will use can vary from a single, karaoke-style unit to two speakers or varying sizes and stands. Some sax players will travel with lights (though not all). With lights, it’s worth mentioning that they aren’t worth having for summer gigs until quite late in the evening but definitely worth having for winter events or weddings. This means that, local or not, they will need to drive to where you are and will need parking relatively close to the venue or where they are performing.
