Iconic Saxophone Songs: Big Sax Hits for the Dance Floor

For most solo sax gigs, I get given a selection of requests for tunes. These could be favourite songs, nostalgia tunes from the club or pieces that chime with the client’s taste.

What happens a lot though is that the client requests some of the iconic sax songs which, whilst great, don’t necessarily work in a gig setting. Below are a selection of iconic sax tunes that are nearly always requested and the modern takes on them that make them suitable for the dance floor.

Careless Whisper - Wham!

Careless Whisper and Baker Street always get requested but have the same problem - they have these awesome sax solos but then the song itself, whilst fantastic, doesn’t keep people on the dance floor. There are plenty of remixes for these tracks but here are my favourite ones:

Careless Whisper - Alex Grey, Coral Reef, Saxify: https://open.spotify.com/track/5LfalnddMDJlcoHk83jgBa?si=7612176c39094f3f

Incidentally, Alex Grey is definitely worth checking out if you’re into lounge/Ibiza Sax tunes!

Baker Street - Gerry Raferty

The Pink Panther - Henry Mancini

Nearly every saxophonist learns how to play the Pink Panther Theme at some point but I have had this requested at a few parties… it’s great but it isn’t a classic dance tune that will keep people on the dance floor. An alternative to that is the sped up techno remix by PAWSA called The Groovy Cat: https://open.spotify.com/track/08d1uFAAtQgLbuvyP2AkoH?si=5840f17ba83b4f74

Jubel - Klingande

The original mix of this is great but has an incredibly long intro. There is nothing wrong with that but your audience is going to want you to get to the good stuff as soon as possible which is obviously the Saxophone solo section. Klingande, a French duo, originally had the sax part played by the British saxophonist Snake Davis. Since its release in 2013 Jubel has become a mainstay in most party sax sets due to its recognisable saxophone solo. Try Jubel (Single Version) by The Sax for a more punchy option

Superstition - Stevie Wonder

This one is a party classic and the Jet-Boot Jack and DJ Malik remix takes this legendary soul pop singalong and gives it a bit more of a punchy, dance edge.
