How Do I Choose The Right Photographer For My Wedding, Party Or Event?

Choosing wedding suppliers can be a very personal experience, with each decision often involving careful research and thought so that you can find your perfect caterer, saxophonist, magician or dog chaperone (that’s actually a thing).
I assume that you will have already booked a fantastic saxophonist to play to your guests (hopefully me) but who are you going to get to take pictures of you and your guests whilst you are looking at your absolute best? And how do you choose?
Most photographers, like saxophonists, that stay in the wedding and party game for a while get very good and very efficient so if they have more than a few year’s experience and are doing well for business then you know you should be in good hands.
Decide what you want from your wedding portraits, most photographers have excellent examples of their work on their website and are relatively versatile. Some definitely seem to prefer to steer clear of traditional formal photos so it is worth deciding how traditional you want to go!
Again, as with any artist or musician, try to work to their strengths. If a photographer is really good at formal photos and traditional portraits then they may well not be as strong doing abstract stuff. It’s always best to discuss exactly what you want in advance.
Some of my favourite photographers to have worked with who were both great for the client and took great footage of me playing sax at events. This showed me that they were keen to be as helpful as possible… not always the case with wedding suppliers! All of the guys below are fantastic and I urge you to get in contact with them.
1) Liam Smith Photography - https://liamsmithphotography.com/
Liam photographed my wedding at the Horniman Museum back in 2021 and was fantastic at getting excellent and hilarious candid shots through the day as well as capturing some genuinely beautiful moments. Professional and charming, I’d highly recommend him for anyone wanting great photos from their wedding!
2) Marc James - https://marcjamesphotography.co.uk/
I met Marc at a gig in one of the ballrooms in the Savoy during Christmas 2025. An incredibly charming man able to switch between being outgoing and friendly to your guests before melting into the background to capture whatever joy or high jinx your party causes!
3) Dana Buciuman - https://www.instagram.com/danabuciuman/?hl=en
I met Dana on a gig for a Romanian couple who had one of the most high energy weddings I’ve ever played. They were an insane crowd and such a huge amount of fun - Dana captured that beautifully!
4) Denise Winter - https://www.denisewinterphotography.co.uk/
A Surrey-based photographer who I met at a very challenging wedding last year who took amazing shots and dealt with quite a difficult bride last summer. She did some fantastic work so I would recommend!
5) Mat Smith - www.brightfilm.co.uk
Mat is a Brighton-based photographer and filmographer who I met at the Yoghurt Rooms in 2024. He was fantastic and went above and beyond for both the client and myself (I got some fantastic footage out of it)!
